A Path of Roses and Thorns looks like a great collection of poems.  Can you tell us a little about it?

Thank you. It’s a very modest compilation of poems I’ve been working on for some time now. At first, I didn’t think it would become a published work as it is today, it sort of manifested itself. Stitching itself from all those items I had written through the years. They’re small testaments to my experiences that I hope others can relate as well.

What inspired you when writing A Path of Roses and Thorns?

Each poem has its own reason and its own time. Each poem came with its own inspiration so you could say I had many inspirations, love, heartbreak, anger, hope. All those emotions that makes us human.

How did you come up with the title to your book?

A Path of Roses and Thorns is actually the title of one of the poems inside the collection. It is the very last one before the dedications section. I felt that it encapsulated what the whole book was about. Life with its ups and downs. Days that brighten our lives, like roses, and bring us joy. Others when there is pain, like thorns, sharp, dangerous with the capacity to makes us bleed.

What will readers get out of your book?

I hope that people get a sense of who I am. And not just me but people like myself who at times I see being dehumanized, as an immigrant and daca recipient I’m no stranger to people calling me an “illegal” or an “alien” as a gay man I’m no stranger to religious organizations referring to us as “sinners.” I hope that when people read my poems and they know who I am that they will realize we are not any less human than they are.

Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing A Path of Roses and Thorns?

Actually no. It wasn’t difficult because the work was already there. The poems just sprouted like wildflowers through concrete cracks. All I had to do was pick them and put them together and they sort of did that themselves, ha!

What do you like to do when not writing?

I’m usually working at the hospital when I’m not writing. Helping my family, my mom, and my little brothers. I’m a nursing assistant so it is a job that also brings me satisfaction. I read on my free time as well and although I’ve never had any music training that’s never stopped me from playing instruments. There is YouTube though.
